Have you ever wondered what your neighborhood looks like to a bird? Or what it feels like to take off from the ground in a private airplane? Or what all those buttons, dials and switches in a cockpit are for? How many times have you seen an airplane in the sky and wished that you could be playing in the clouds, too?

The EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association, www.youngeagles.org) wants to offer everyone between the ages of 8 and 17 an opportunity to fly in a private airplane with a qualified pilot.

It’s safe. It’s fun. It’s free. It’s fantastic!!!

Across the country, over 1,000,000 Young Eagles have had the chance to experience their first flight. By 2004, the 100th anniversary of the first flight by the Wright Brothers, EAA members have flown over 1,000,000 young eagles.

Here at Geauga County Airport, EAA Chapter 5 (www.EAA5.org) has flown over1500 Young Eagle Flights. You can help us and have some fun at the same time. We are looking for groups (from 3-150 in size) of young people (scouts, church groups, school classes) to become Young Eagles. Young Eagles can fly alone with a pilot in a two-seater plane, but we also have pilots with 3 and 4 seat planes, so you can share this experience with your friends. Everyone will receive a bit of “ground school”. Your pilot will walk with you around the airplane and explain to you how it works and you can ask questions. You will learn how a pilot reads a “sectional” (That’s what an aviation map is called.) Everything is arranged to make this a fun, safe and pleasant introduction to aviation.
